Chapter 8

Connie stood in the kitchen as she left a message for Miguel: “Hi, honey. I just wanted to give you an update. She’s home and will be all right. I’ll tell you more when you are able to call. I love you. Be safe and have fun.”

Connie hung up the phone. Of all the times for him to decide to hike the Appalachian Trail, she thought to herself. She wasn’t mad at Miguel for wanting to go with the boys to hike the trail starting in New Hampshire and ending in Maine. She knew he would be beside himself once he retrieved his messages. Cat was, and always would be, his little girl. Shaking off her fears and concerns, Connie went into the living room and handed her daughter a glass of water and her medicine.

“Thanks, Mom,” Cat said and swallowed the aspirin her mother handed her, hoping that it might dull the massive headache she had been fighting all night. “I’m sorry, Mom.”

“What for?”

Her mother had been waiting on her hand and foot from the moment she had brought her home from the medical center. Cat understood how scared her mother must have been when she got the call about the attack, but all this attention was driving her crazy.

“For scaring you last night, for you having to come get me, for almost getting killed because I screwed up.”

“You did not screw up, so get that thought out of your head right now. You got hurt for doing your job, a job that comes with risks. I’m just glad you’re going to be all right.”

Truth be told, when Sarah had called and told her that Cat was on her way to the medical center, her world felt like it had spun out of control. She still didn’t know how she got to the clinic, but when she walked in and saw her daughter sitting up and talking to the on-call doctor, she had cried in relief.

“I still don’t know who saved me. I need to call the sheriff and find out so I can thank whoever it was.”

Before Connie could say anything, the doorbell rang.

“You stay right here on this couch, young lady.”

Cat obeyed but had a pout on her face that made Connie laugh.

When she opened the door, Connie found Dee waiting anxiously on the doorstep.

“Dee, come on in.”

“Is she okay?” Dee asked.

“She’s in the living room, pouting. Go ahead on in.”

When she saw Cat sitting on the couch, bruised but alive, she felt relieved, but the fear that had filled her when she had found out that Cat was hurt came flooding out as she screamed, “Don’t you ever scare me like that again!” Dee looked her up and down, noting the line of stitches running across the top left side of her forehead and matching black eye. “What in the hell were you thinking? Don’t you ever do that to me again, do you understand?”

Cat smiled. “I love you too.”

“Argh!” She looked over at Connie. “Did they catch the guy who did this?” she demanded.
